We are still trying to understand what AI looks like. For many people, it looks like a conversation: something that listens, responds, and reasons in words. But the best AI, and the most common kind we will live with, will be the invisible kind. It will not talk much. It will simply work.
In the rush to build AI-driven products, it is easy to forget what people actually want from automation. Most users are not looking for a new way to chat with their tools. They want things to happen reliably, with minimal effort and interruption.
When I think about what good automation feels like, I often come back to something ordinary: the dishwasher. You start it, walk away, and trust it to do its job. If something is wrong, it lets you know. That is the ideal many AI systems should aim for: quiet competence that earns trust through consistency, not conversation.
I lead product and technology at Kaunt, where we build AI for finance automation. Over time, I have found that the real challenge is not getting AI to understand more. It is getting it to ask less.
Most of what we call AI today still demands too much attention. It asks for prompts, confirmations, or supervision. It is like having a dishwasher that asks when to start, which cycle to use, and whether to dry the dishes. Helpful, maybe, but missing the point of automation.
Mature AI should feel like infrastructure. It runs in the background, executes reliably, and only interrupts when something is wrong. In finance automation, that means posting invoices correctly most of the time and surfacing only the rare exception.
Reliability, not interactivity, is what builds trust. The more often users have to ask, check, or confirm, the less intelligent the system feels.
Interaction still has an important role. Natural language is powerful when a task is ambiguous or difficult to define. In those cases, AI can act as a translator of intent.
You do not always know the exact rule you are trying to express. You just know what you want. That is where natural language shines. It allows you to describe your goal in plain words, and the system does the hard part: turning that fuzzy intent into structured logic.
In finance, this is especially relevant. Every company has its own rules, approval flows, and compliance checks. It is impossible for AI to know these without being told. Conversational AI becomes powerful here because it can take a simple conversation and map it into a structured set of rules for the agent to follow. When uncertainty arises, it can ask the user once, learn the pattern, and continue autonomously from there.
For example, in Kaunt Document AI, users can correct extractions in natural language. If a field is wrong, they can simply write, “That is the invoice number, not the order ID.” The system interprets the feedback, adjusts, and keeps working automatically. There is no need to open a configuration screen or define a new rule.
This kind of interaction is not about having a chat. It is about capturing intent and removing friction. The conversation exists only when clarity is missing, not as a permanent mode of operation.
AI systems can be viewed along a spectrum:
Automation – The task is clear and well defined. The AI acts independently, like the dishwasher.
Assistance – The task is partially defined. The AI collaborates with you through natural language or other light-touch interfaces.
Supervision – The AI is uncertain or untrustworthy, requiring ongoing human monitoring.
Our goal as builders should always be to move work from supervision to assistance, and from assistance to automation. Each step up the ladder removes a layer of cognitive load from the user.
In finance, posting an invoice is a dishwasher problem: clear inputs, defined outputs, measurable success. But deciding how to post a new kind of invoice, or what the right exception rule should be, is less defined. That is where natural language interaction helps. It bridges the gap between human reasoning and system logic.
The same principle applies far beyond financial software. In design tools, AI can turn vague input like “make it feel calmer” into layout and color suggestions. In operations software, it can learn from a single conversation how to handle an escalation or approval flow that differs from the standard process. In software engineering, a developer can say, “Generate tests for this module,” and let the AI decide what that means in context. In each case, language helps define the problem space, not execute the solution.
Once the rules are clear, you should not have to ask again. The best AI learns and fades into the background.
There is growing excitement about AI agents, but many still confuse “agent” with “chatbot.” Real agents do not wait to be told what to do. They observe, act, and coordinate quietly.
Imagine an accounts payable agent that automatically validates invoices, posts them, and only flags issues when confidence drops or compliance might be at risk. It does not need a conversation to start its work. It is triggered by data and context, not prompts. If something in the process is unclear, it can ask the user once, store the outcome as a rule, and continue independently from then on.
That is the kind of intelligence that scales. It does not need to talk constantly. It needs to perform reliably.
Natural language will remain essential. It is how we express nuance, ambiguity, and creativity. But it should not become the main interface for every task. The goal of AI is not to replace buttons with sentences. It is to remove unnecessary steps altogether.
In the end, automation removes work. Natural language clarifies it. The art of building intelligent systems is knowing when to use which.
The dishwasher does not talk to you because it does not need to. Most AI should not either. It should just do the job, quietly and reliably, and only speak up when something is wrong.
